Neighbors Helping Neighbors Live Healthier

The Texas Kidney Foundation’s Community Health Clubs bring people together to learn, support one another, and take action on kidney health and related chronic conditions. These clubs create safe, accessible spaces where Texans can share experiences, ask questions, and receive trusted education about kidney disease, diabetes, and heart health. Built on the principle of neighbors helping neighbors, the clubs transform community gatherings into centers of prevention and empowerment.

Education That Makes a Difference

Each club meeting focuses on practical, easy-to-apply knowledge. Participants learn about early detection of kidney disease, the importance of blood pressure and blood sugar control, and evidence-based treatments such as SGLT2 inhibitors. By teaching diabetes and blood pressure management, the clubs target conditions that drive CKD progression and cost escalation. Preventing a single case from reaching ESRD can avoid $1.3–1.8 million in annual costs per 1,000 patients screened. Nutrition is also central, with “food as medicine” sessions that highlight culturally relevant, affordable ways to eat for better health. By making complex medical information clear and actionable, the clubs help members turn knowledge into healthier daily choices.

Peer Support and Lasting Change

The Community Health Clubs go beyond education—they foster a network of mutual support. Patients, caregivers, students, and Community Health Workers work side by side, encouraging one another to stay on track with lifestyle changes, medications, and follow-up care. This peer-driven model builds accountability, trust, and resilience. Over time, the clubs strengthen not just individual health but the overall wellbeing of neighborhoods, reducing reliance on costly emergency and late-stage care.

Impact for Patients, Donors, and Policymakers

For patients, the clubs provide both knowledge and encouragement to manage health proactively. For donors, they represent a high-value investment in prevention—ensuring every dollar goes further by helping Texans avoid the enormous costs of dialysis and hospitalizations. For policymakers, the Community Health Clubs are a scalable, community-based solution that reduces healthcare expenditures, improves chronic disease outcomes, and builds healthier, more self-sufficient communities across Texas.
