Empowering Patients and Families

The Texas Kidney Foundation’s H.O.P.E. (Helping Our People Empower) Program is dedicated to giving patients and their families the tools, knowledge, and confidence they need to take control of their kidney health. By addressing one of the most critical challenges in kidney care—the lack of timely information and access to transplant options—H.O.P.E. ensures that Texans are no longer left navigating their journey alone.

Education and Resources for Transplant Access

Through summits, workshops, and community “edutainment” events, H.O.P.E. delivers clear, practical education about early detection, treatment pathways, and kidney transplantation. Participants learn about multi-center registration, paired donation, and living kidney exchange—options that can dramatically reduce wait times and improve outcomes. Every family is provided with digital toolkits and resources that turn complex medical decisions into understandable, actionable steps.

The Survival Advantage of Transplantation

A kidney transplant offers patients a profound survival benefit compared to dialysis. Five-year survival rates for kidney transplant recipients are typically 80–90%, while patients who remain on dialysis face survival rates of less than 50%. Outcomes are even stronger with living-donor transplants, which provide the best long-term survival and quality of life. By equipping patients with the knowledge and pathways to pursue transplantation early, H.O.P.E. helps families make choices that extend life, reduce suffering, and restore independence.

Impact for Patients, Donors, and Policymakers

The benefits of H.O.P.E. extend beyond the individual patient. Living kidney transplantation is not only life-saving—it is also far more cost-effective than lifelong dialysis, saving Medicare and Medicaid systems tens of thousands of dollars per patient each year. For donors, supporting H.O.P.E. means multiplying their impact: empowering patients, strengthening families, and improving healthcare efficiency. For policymakers, it represents a proven, scalable model that reduces costs while ensuring Texans have access to the most effective, life-saving treatments.
